Go Left. Go Big. Or Go Home: Dear Joe Biden #03

Pass it on: Let’s all Tell @JOEBIDEN: STOP fetishizing the middle class. You know what, by definition, is required to keep the myth of a middle class alive? Poverty! @DEARJOEBIDEN EP. 3 FROM @ACRONYMTV1

Dear Joe,
As Donald Trump continues to flounder and flail, it might be a tempting campaign strategy to play it safe, win the electoral college, push Humpy Dumpty Trump off of his wall, and waltz to victory without much of an effort. You must be thinking that you can run a Hillary Clinton style campaign with only a few minor tweaks to convince some white people in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin to relegate Trump to the ashbin of single term Presidential failures.

Make no mistake: Trump must be stopped. But let us also recognize this moment as one that calls for something so much more significant than the old Joe Biden middle of the road mentality. What do you say, Joe? You’ve got the votes of the centrists, corporatists, and the Karen Democrats all locked up. They are not going anywhere. If you pursue a traditional campaign, with watered-down melba toast policy demands, you risk the same fate as Hillary Clinton.

The ‘America as a Cake’ Metaphor

Think of America as a Devils Food Chocolate cake. And for years, we have been eating a version of this cake, this cake that usually tastes delicious and tasty and even a little sexy, am I right? And many of us did not think so much about the ingredients, because this cake just tasted so good.

Like a country, a cake is made up of a few essential ingredients. For this Devils Food Cake, we need 2 eggs. These eggs, in my little metaphor you see, are foundational ingredients of what makes up America, without these eggs, you could not have built the America we have now.

These eggs are Racism, and more specifically, anti-blackness.

Can you take an egg out of the cake, please? I mean, now that the cake is baked, can you take those anti-black eggs out? Can you pull the broken shells out from your compost bin, and put the yolk and the egg whites back into the shell? Can you make the shell whole again, put that humpy dumpty shit back together so you can return them to the store and say: “hey Trader fucking Joe, I don’t want these anti-black eggs! I want racial justice eggs! This is some bullshit. I don’t want these eggs!”

And Trader Joe is all like: “but you’ve been making that same Devils Food cake for like 400 years, and it is so good. It is so popular. I mean, do you know how popular that cake is?”

“It is so popular that while cities cut their budgets for just about everything, funding for police departments skyrockets, all to protect this Devils Food cake. And I’ll tell you another thing- the carton that you took those eggs from—that isn’t even American. It’s Native American. And you know how much the original colonizers who made the first Devils Food Cake wanted that egg carton?

Genocide. That is how much they wanted your eggs and your egg carton.”

Again- that is the law and order the police are enforcing. And I know that defund the police does not equate to disappear all forces from the face of the earth tomorrow. Instead, it means that communities will get what they need and not have to navigate the occupying forces that so many urban police forces have become. And if I know that, Joe Biden, knows that. And Joe, where are you on this issue?

There Can Be No Return to Normal: Dear Joe Biden #01

WATCH: Tell @JoeBiden – Yes, #TrumpMustGo, but there can be no return to normal | @DearJoeBiden ep 1 on @AcronymTV1

An Enemy of our Enemy is Not Always Our Friend

At the intersection of the continued violent racist policing and killing in our country’s global Pandemic, and the Trump administration’s criminal response to both, at least two things are clear.

First, we must remove Trump from the Oval office.

Second, there can be no return to a so-called “pre-Trump normal.”What is less clear is the answer to the question: are we so beaten down that we will not fight for #2, out of fear for losing #1?

This new weekly series, Dear Joe Biden, will ask that you engage in a little nuance. And yeah, I know it is difficult to do in an era when the daily assault on common decency fired from the cannon’s mouth that is Trump’s bully pulpit. Right now, the highest aspiration that many people can dream of is simply to drive the Trump regime out of office. For many of us, Trump has set the bar so low, that —yeah—Joe Biden just may clear it.

And in that objective, I’m with you—but an enemy of our enemy is not always our friend. And Joe, you do have a long track record of implementing and supporting policies that quite frankly- are simply not friendly.

Black Snake Down: Voices from Standing Rock

(image: Michael Nigro)
It was the day before the deadline set by the Army Corps of Engineers for the people here to vacate.

An estimated 10 thousand people, including approximately 2,000 Veterans who were prepared to act as human shields against any state aggression were hunkering down under the watchful eyes of the various police agencies assembled high on the hill just past the 1806 bridge. As the state had already displayed a wiliness to employ a level of brutality not seen since the civil rights era water cannons—in sub-zero temperatures no less—a PTSD-fueled adrenaline was growing thick in the air.

And then, the surprise announcement came down that DAPL was dead—for now.

First Nations people are familiar with broken promises and far far worse, and also possess the knowledge that Donald Trump will soon be the President, so this victory was embraced with caution and the knowledge that the battle is certainly not over.

The following interviews were taken before and immediately after the surprise announcement on December 4, 2016—and capture the spirit of that very special day.   -Dennis

REMI-

Remi, of the Navajo Nation, is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He has been at camp for over 5 months.

He told me that he objects when people thank him for his military service. “Service is what you get when you bring a car to a mechanic,” he told me. “I was used in the military to secure natural resources for corporations overseas—and now it’s here. And so, I take issue when someone says ‘thank you for your service’.

About the militarized police forces who have utilized brutalized water protectors, Remi says “Colonial violence has not ended. We currently have 100-140 million—Indigenous people—who are not here anymore … What does genocide look like?”

Tarak Kauff-

“We (non-Indigenous people) are all part of that genocide that happened. And we need to make up for that. You know I am a member of Veterans for Peace and We have a commitment to stop war, all wars. And this war has been going on for 500 years—and it’s a genocidal war. This pipeline is part of that war. This is warfare right here in America.”

Lance King-

“A Soldier takes orders, and a Warrior chooses to do the right thing for the health and goodness of the people.”

Dandelion Cloverdale-

“Before colonization happened we (2 spirited people) held powerful positions in our communities. Through assimilation a lot of two-spirit people we removed from our indigenous communities, but we are reclaiming our space in the sacred circle.”

Tokata Iron Eyes-

Tokata- all of 14 years old—was part of a youth movement that inspired the Sacred Stone Camp. Only moments after the announcement, she was already planning the next steps.“We are going to tell the banks (that fund the pipeline) that they have to pull out their money,” she told me. “They are funding people to get shot at with rubber bullets; they are funding people to get maced—and sprayed with a fireman hose. They are paying for people to get hurt. People need to realize that that is what they are putting their money into.”

Tara Houske-

“We are not sacrifice zones. This is a stand for treaty rights… We know that the next administration is coming in, and we have to stay strong—but as it stands right now with these players today, we won.”

Standing Rock Victory (for now)

Dec 4, 2016—Oceti Sakowin Camp

Remi, an Indigenous Vet of Navajo Nation, told me that Veterans were coming to risk their lives to protect the Water Protectors as a gesture of apology on behalf of the 7th Calvery for atrocities and genocide that have occurred on this land throughout history.

100-140 million were exterminated, Remi told me, due to the same policies that “We are experiencing to this day.”

The sense of preparation for an upcoming battle changed to euphoria and renewed resolve, however, when the news came down that the pipeline project will be delayed—and perhaps rerouted.

A significant, if temporary victory. DAPL could decide to continue drilling and simply pay the fines. In that case, will the Obama administration send in law enforcement to say #NODAPL?

There is still much to be decided here.

The Green Party’s Breakthrough Moment | Acronym podcast #15

Ever since Bernie went bust and endorsed Hillary Clinton, Green Party Presidential Candidate Jill Stein has been riding a groundswell fueled by the #Afterbern. Now, let’s be clear: Jill Stein is not going to win the 2016 Presidential election, but you should vote for her anyway.

David Cobb, a 2004 Presidential candidate on the Green Party ticket talks with Dennis Trainor, Jr. about the ghost of Ralph’s Nader’s “success”, how the Jill Stein campaign can define victory without winning the White House, the perception of the Green Party as a club for older white hippies, and the need for a vibrant independent party of the left.
